Representation of Verbal and Visual Bullying in Indonesian Movie "Kalian Pantas Mati": Barthes's Theory

Abstract

This study examines the representation of verbal and visual bullying in the Indonesian movie Kalian Pantas  Mati using Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory. It aims to identify the forms and meanings of verbal and  visual bullying depicted through film dialogues. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method by  observing 27 scenes, transcribing dialogues, and analyzing them based on denotation, connotation, and  myth. The results show that verbal bullying is represented through insults, name-calling, and verbal threats,  Often combined with the visual bullying is represented through threatening gesture, exclusion, and mocking  image. The study concludes that bullying in the film is normalized through discourse, reflecting power relations among students. This research contributes to media studies by highlighting how films can shape 
the understanding of bullying in society.
