Code Switching and Code Mixing of Indramayu Dialect on Daus's Terus TikTok Account

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of code switching and code mixing used in Daus Terus’s TikTok content and to examine their role in representing and preserving the local identity of the Indramayu dialect in digital communication. A descriptive qualitative method was employed. Data were collected through observation and documentation of selected TikTok videos uploaded from January 1, 2024, to January 1, 2025. The utterances were transcribed and analyzed using Hoffmann’s (1991) framework of code switching and code mixing. The findings reveal 45 instances of code switching, consisting of 23 inter-sentential switchings, 16 intra-sentential switchings, and 6 tag switchings, with inter-sentential switching being the dominant type. In code mixing, intra-sentential mixing appeared most frequently, followed by intra-lexical and phonological mixing. The study shows that bilingual language practices in Daus Terus’s TikTok content function not only as communication strategies but also as markers of local identity and instruments of cultural preservation in digital spaces. The findings contribute to sociolinguistics, digital media studies, and regional language preservation efforts by demonstrating how social media can support the maintenance of local dialects among younger audiences.
